She was with her family when she passed away in Falls Church. It would be 12 years later that Marshall was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Lyndon B. Johnson. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He retired from the court in 1991 and died in 1993. Since that time, Cecilia Marshall served on\u00a0the\u00a0boards\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Supreme\u00a0Court\u00a0Historical\u00a0Society\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0NAACP\u00a0Legal\u00a0Defense\u00a0Fund.\u00a0 She\u00a0also\u00a0participated\u00a0in\u00a0church\u00a0activities\u00a0and\u00a0volunteer\u00a0work.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u00a0is\u00a0survived\u00a0by\u00a0four\u00a0grandchildren\u00a0and\u00a0three\u00a0great\u00a0grandchildren\u00a0in\u00a0addition\u00a0to\u00a0her\u00a0two sons, Thurgood Marshall Jr. of Arlington, and John Marshall of Falls Church.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cecilia \u201cCissy\u201d Marshall, a former NAACP legal secretary and widow of Thurgood Marshall, the first Black justice to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, died Tuesday Nov. 22.
