{"id":1201321,"date":"2024-02-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-21T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.washingtoninformer.com\/?p=1201321"},"modified":"2024-02-21T15:59:41","modified_gmt":"2024-02-21T20:59:41","slug":"black-ballerinas-jones-haywood-dance-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.washingtoninformer.com\/black-ballerinas-jones-haywood-dance-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Jones-Haywood&#8217;s Offers Dance Training, Life Lessons\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>More than 80 years ago, Doris Jones and Claire Haywood not only started a dance studio to offer top-notch training, they created a safe space for Black dancers to grow as artists and learn to navigate the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBrown buns and brown skin and brown ballet shoes and tights- I loved ballet as a little girl and Jones-Haywood was where I saw myself reflected in the ballet world,\u201d multi-hyphenate artist and theatre-maker ChelseaDee Harrison told The Informer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 1941, Jones-Haywood Dance School has trained countless successful alumni including, three-time Tony winner Hinton Battle, Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient and Tony Award-winning performer Chita Rivera, and celebrated choreographer George Faison.\u00a0 With a long\u00a0reputation of excellence, Jones-Haywood has been referred to as a \u201cdance-feeder institution\u201d for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtoninformer.com\/alvin-ailey-65th-anniversary-dmv-natives\/\">Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dancetheatreofharlem.org\/our-history\/\">Dance Theatre of Harlem<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now an arts educator, Harrison said Jones-Haywood taught her far more than choreography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had a place to learn about our bodies and to begin to appreciate the strength and power of our bodies,\u201d she explained. \u201cWe were also perfecting a technique that wasn\u2019t created with African bodies in mind. To learn the technique from Black ballet dancers \u2014 dancers who loved and advanced the art form \u2014 taught me how to see and feel beauty \u2014 even in spaces not intended for me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The artist said she still applies the lessons she learned at Jones-Haywood on and off the stage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s where I learned the meaning of grace under pressure. Ballet technique is hard on the body and difficult to execute but beauty is born from making the struggle look easy. That\u2019s a lesson in living for me,\u201d she said. \u201cLife requires a great deal of poise under pressure and making it look easy is difficult but not impossible.
