\u201cBlack Vote, Black Power,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0a collaboration between Keith Boykin and Word In Black,\u00a0<\/em>
\nexamines the issues, the candidates, and what\u2019s at stake for Black America in the 2024 presidential election.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u200b\u200bThe past few weeks of campus protests have exposed the hypocrisy of Republicans who claim to stand for \u201claw and order\u201d and free speech.<\/p>\n

As NYPD officers\u00a0converged<\/a> onto Hamilton Hall at Columbia University recently, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump<\/a> called into Fox News and complained that police should have acted \u201ca lot sooner.\u201d The protesters had done \u201ctremendous damage\u201d to a New York City \u201clandmark<\/a>,\u201d he told Fox News anchor Sean Hannity.<\/p>\n

This from the man who sat in the White House watching TV and doing nothing for\u00a0187 minutes<\/a>\u00a0when the nation\u2019s most important landmark, the U.S. Capitol, came under attack on January 6, 2021.<\/p>\n

When it comes to \u201claw and order,\u201d Trump and the Republicans believe that laws should only apply to certain people. We saw this with Trump\u2019s contradictory responses to two defining news events in his final year in office.<\/p>\n

When racial justice protests erupted in the summer of 2020 after George Floyd\u00a0was killed\u00a0<\/a>by police in Minneapolis, Trump\u2019s response was forceful, condemning Black Lives Matter activists as \u201choodlums<\/a>.\u201d \u201cThey\u2019re bad people. They don\u2019t love our country. And they\u2019re not taking down our monuments,\u201d he objected.<\/p>\n

But when the January 6 insurrectionists attacked the nation\u2019s most sacred monument, Trump waited more than three hours before he reluctantly recorded a video message to the violent mob who tried to stop our democracy. \u201cWe love you<\/a>. You\u2019re\u00a0very special,\u201d Trump told the attackers. \u201cI know how you feel.\u201d<\/p>\n

He was not alone. A year after the January 6th failed coup attempt, the Republican National Committee adopted a resolution calling the attack \u201clegitimate political discourse<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard to argue for law and order while you\u2019re justifying an attack on Capitol Police Officers and defending a man who runs a company that was\u00a0convicted<\/a>\u00a0of criminal tax fraud two years ago and is currently on trial, facing\u00a088 charges<\/a>\u00a0in four criminal indictments.<\/p>\n

The selective outrage from Republicans also exposes their hypocrisy about antisemitism.<\/p>\n

When torch-bearing Nazis marched through the college town of Charlottesville, Virginia, chanting \u201cJews will not replace us\u201d in 2017, Trump claimed there were \u201cvery fine\u00a0people<\/a>\u00a0on both sides.\u201d When 11 people were shot and killed at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018, Trump\u00a0blamed the synagogue<\/a>\u00a0for not having armed guards on site. When Trump tweeted an anti-Semitic image of Hillary Clinton next to a pile of cash and the\u00a0Star of David<\/a>\u00a0in 2016, Republicans still stood by him. And when Marjorie Taylor Greene claimed that\u00a0Jewish space lasers<\/a>\u00a0caused the 2018 California wildfires, many Republicans stood by her as well.<\/p>\n

Even as Trump has\u00a0been indicted\u00a0by four different grand juries of American citizens, Republicans keep\u00a0blaming<\/a>\u00a0Jewish billionaire George Soros. They never launched a congressional investigation into how Trump\u2019s incendiary rhetoric contributed to a\u00a0rise in antisemitic hate crimes<\/a>\u00a0when he was president, or about the\u00a0Neo-Nazis<\/a>\u00a0who participated in the January 6 riot. But they are investigating college presidents and college students for antisemitism in the wake of the October 7 Hamas attack in Israel.<\/p>\n

Both should be examined, as well as the rise of\u00a0Islamophobia<\/a>\u00a0in America, but Republicans\u00a0are only focused\u00a0on one issue. Just today, the House passed a\u00a0divisive bill<\/a>\u00a0to crack down on student protests by defining criticism of Israel as a form of antisemitism.<\/p>\n

The GOP goal is to exploit campus conflict to drive a larger agenda against higher education. They seek to\u00a0cut funding<\/a>\u00a0for universities,\u00a0fire college professors<\/a>\u00a0and presidents, and\u00a0eliminate diversity<\/a>, equity, and inclusion programs that challenge white supremacy.<\/p>\n

Just a\u00a0few years ago, Republicans argued that we needed\u00a0new laws<\/a>\u00a0to protect free speech and unpopular ideas on college campuses. But now those same Republicans are\u00a0policing speech<\/a>\u00a0and arresting even peaceful protesters.<\/p>\n

\n

The true path to peace is the same on American college campuses as it is in Israel and Gaza.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n

I taught for several years at Columbia University and City College of New York, and I\u00a0support the right of students to protest peacefully on those college campuses and elsewhere, just as I support a two-state solution in the Middle East. I do not support violence from protesters or\u00a0from\u00a0police,\u00a0or\u00a0antisemitism, Islamophobia, or the harassment of Jewish or Muslim students.<\/p>\n

For those who sympathize with the cause of Palestinians but don\u2019t support college protests, I urge you to read Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s \u201cLetter from a Birmingham Jail<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0Dr. King had no problem with protest and tension, but he\u00a0condemned protest critics who were \u201cmore devoted to order than to justice\u201d or preferred \u201ca negative peace\u00a0which\u00a0is the absence of tension\u00a0to\u00a0a positive peace\u00a0which\u00a0is the presence of justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

The true path to peace is the same on American college campuses as it is in Israel and Gaza. Sustainable peace will not come through violent confrontation, displays of force, or retribution. Nor will it come from hypocritical show trials and stunt bills. It will only come by dismantling systems of oppression and replacing them with systems of justice.<\/p>\n
