{"id":1243298,"date":"2026-01-13T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-13T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.washingtoninformer.com\/?p=1243298"},"modified":"2026-01-13T12:47:42","modified_gmt":"2026-01-13T17:47:42","slug":"derick-coley-delegate-district-24","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.washingtoninformer.com\/derick-coley-delegate-district-24\/","title":{"rendered":"Derrick Coley to Serve in House of Delegates; Danielle Hunter to Fill Council Vacancy; Moore Selects Darrell Odom Sr. for District 27 Vacancy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A flurry of legislative appointments at the state and local level is shuffling elected leaders to higher positions while adding a Bowie State University lobbyist and a retired fire chief to the Maryland General Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-derrick-coley-to-serve-in-house-of-delegates-representing-district-24\"><strong>Derrick Coley to Serve in House of Delegates Representing District 24<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.derrickcoley.com\/biography\">Derrick Coley<\/a>, a longtime member of the Prince George\u2019s County Democratic Central Committee (DCC), was unanimously appointed to serve as the next delegate in <a href=\"https:\/\/planning.maryland.gov\/Redistricting\/Documents\/2020Maps\/Leg\/2022-Legislative-District24.pdf\">District 24<\/a>, a central county district stretching from Glenn Dale to Edmonston along the D.C. border.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to say thank you for allowing me to serve almost 12 years, among you pushing democratic principles throughout this county and throughout the great state of Maryland,\u201d said Coley shortly after the vote on Jan. 5. \u201cLet\u2019s get to work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coley\u2019s competitors included Glenarden Councilmember Cashenna Cross and small business owner LaTasha Ward, who came in fourth during the 2022 Democratic primary for Delegate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ward has announced she plans to run for the seat in the 2026 primary election.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI will be filing to run in the upcoming primary so that District 24 residents can decide directly who they want to represent them,\u201d she told The Informer. \u201cI planned to run regardless of the outcome. I believe the people showed in 2018 and 2022 that they like what I stand for. (Courtesy of Prince George&#8217;s County Council)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>A seat opened after the appointment of Prince George\u2019s County Councilmember Wala Blegay to fill an at-large vacancy following former Councilmember Calvin Hawkins\u2019 retirement from the legislative body. <a href=\"https:\/\/pgccouncil.us\/directory.aspx?eid=409\">Danielle Hunter<\/a>, who served as the appointment liaison for County Executive Aisha Braveboy, was <a href=\"https:\/\/pgccouncil.us\/m\/newsflash\/Home\/Detail\/1942\">unanimously appointed <\/a>to fill the vacancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to congratulate Danielle Hunter on the unanimous vote, and I look forward to her joining the Council to serve with us,\u201d said Council Chair Krystal Oriadha. \u201cHer dedication, vision, and commitment to our county is invaluable as we start our new legislative session later this month.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 20 county residents, including former Board of Education Member Belinda Queen Cunningham, applied and spoke during a virtual County Council meeting to discuss their qualifications and goals in the role.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am ready to get to work on behalf of the residents of District 6,\u201d Hunter told the Council during Friday\u2019s public selection process. \u201cI had the opportunity to meet with residents of Cameron Grove, who expressed concerns about economic development initiatives, affordable housing, and public safety. Moore selected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/darrell-odom-4ba1a4110\">Darrell Odom Sr<\/a>., a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lXrw-9vYDjk\">veteran<\/a> and retired fire chief, to fill the legislative vacancy in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.princegeorgescountymd.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/media-document\/LegislativeDistrict27A.pdf\">District 27A<\/a> on Jan. 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vacancy was created following Kevin Harris\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtoninformer.com\/maryland-senate-seat-harris\/\">recent appointment<\/a> to the state Senate and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtoninformer.com\/sen-michael-jackson-maryland-police\/\">ascension of Michael Jackson<\/a> to lead the Maryland State Police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/msa.maryland.gov\/msa\/mdmanual\/05sen\/html\/msa18396.html\">Sen. Kevin Harris<\/a> (D-District 27), supported Odom during the Charles County Democratic Central Committee (DCC) meeting to fill the vacancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDarrell is not just a candidate.
