Gerald Durley admits he didn\u2019t expect a rebirth of the movement that sparked a dream in the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Jan. 19 marked national recognition of the fallen freedom fighter, a day ahead of the first anniversary of President Donald Trump\u2019s second inauguration, Durley is moving with a reimagined take of his comrade\u2019s mission in 2026.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf he were alive today, I don&#8217;t know how many people would listen to him. King was at the right time,\u201d said Durley, pastor emeritus of <a href=\"https:\/\/pmbcatlanta.com\/\">Providence Missionary Baptist Church<\/a> in Atlanta, Georgia. \u201cEverything is around time\u2013\u2013 Barack [Obama] was at the right time\u2026Sojourner Truth was at the right time. (Ja&#8217;Mon Jackson\/The Washington Informer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cTwo [questions] made us strong as a people: \u2018What are you willing to sacrifice and what are you willing to risk?\u2019\u201d said the international civil rights activist. \u201c[King] never saw his four children do the things that many of us see now, but he gave that up for something he believed in. Now, our cause is: how do we strengthen one another? [How do] we do that with our young people?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Answering that question while demonstrating King\u2019s commitment to justice is the status quo of the annual<a href=\"https:\/\/mlkholidaydc.org\/\"> MLK Holiday DC<\/a>, which hosted events of celebration and remembrance throughout Ward 8 from Jan. 12-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As hundreds were activated in the theme: \u201cThe Struggle is Real. The Fight is Still,\u201d this year\u2019s commemoration set the stage for a yearlong mission to champion the \u201ccause of King\u2019s life\u201d \u2013 while honoring a holistic, generational influence that shaped African American liberation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt isn&#8217;t just history \u2013 it&#8217;s a blueprint,\u201d said Kita Williams, a member of MLK Holiday DC committee. \u201cThe question is do you not only know his dream, but what are you doing with it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mlk-holiday-dc-begs-the-question-what-are-you-willing-to-do\"><strong>MLK Holiday DC Begs the Question: &#8216;What Are You Willing to Do?&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Across a series of activations, MLK Holiday DC \u2014 co-chaired by Stuart Anderson and Washington Informer Publisher Denise Rolark Barnes \u2014 highlighted the breadth of King\u2019s dedication to challenging systems and bettering communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the kickoff at Southwest\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/lwicc.org\/\">Living Word Church<\/a> to the culminating 21st Annual MLK Peace Walk and Parade on Jan. 19, local religious leaders, activists, officials, and advocates across all walks of life convened in a mission to continue what King started \u2013 particularly in the name of faith, passion, and collective resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. King reminds us that justice\u2026happens when people show up, speak up, and stand together,\u201d Williams emphasized. \u201cHe wasn&#8217;t just dreaming \u2014 he was organizing, challenging systems, pushing for real change in real time\u2026and that\u2019s exactly what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the Eighth Annual Prayer Breakfast \u2013 held at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbuccdc.org\/\">Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ (UCC)<\/a> on Saturday, Jan. 17 \u2013 keynote speaker, the Rt. Rev. It\u2019s about what we as a community need to move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Durley says, beyond the third Monday of January, King\u2019s legacy lives in a deeper understanding of the man behind the impact \u2013 the one whose contribution to America extends beyond the history books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would paint him as a human being, and\u2026you are a human being,\u201d he continued. \u201cYou [have] to understand who you are, what you&#8217;re about, what you&#8217;re willing to give.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to carrying that mantle through 2026, the longtime faith leader and freedom fighter offered a candid response: it\u2019s been done before, and it\u2019s time to do it again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI never thought that we&#8217;d be fighting for civil rights, voting rights, human rights again, 60 years later\u2026but I feel more hopeful now than I did, sometimes, in the old days,\u201d Durley told The Informer. \u201c[Young people now have] all of the tools, the resources.
