{"id":1243936,"date":"2026-01-28T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-28T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.washingtoninformer.com\/?p=1243936"},"modified":"2026-01-28T16:35:28","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T21:35:28","slug":"ghana-education-gap-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.washingtoninformer.com\/ghana-education-gap-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Every Child Deserves A Classroom: Addressing Ghana&#8217;s Education Gap"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Prince Anthony Bart-Appiah, a royal from Ghana\u2019s Akwamu Traditional Family, is on a mission to close his country\u2019s wide education gap, as more than 5,400 schools there operate under trees or in makeshift structures \u2014 unstable conditions that can diminish the quality of learning.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To achieve his goal, Bart-Appiah is partnering with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rgu.ac.uk\/study\/finance-funding\/funding-and-scholarships\/2270-ghana-education-trust-get-fund-mission\">Ghana Education Trust Fund<\/a> (GETFund) through the Every Child Deserves a Classroom.&nbsp; Expected to launch in March, the initiative encourages those within the African diaspora looking to connect with the motherland to explore their heritage by visiting Ghana, and to give back to the community by adopting trees and helping build schools.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe diaspora should care because education is the foundation of progress,\u201d Bart-Appiah told The Informer. \u201cIf we support education in Africa, it\u2019s an investment in future leaders and also [in]\u2026 anyone with an unquenchable thirst to connect to the continent of Africa and [to] Ghana.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative calls on people of African descent to return to the continent as pilgrims, allowing them to spiritually and culturally connect to the land. (Courtesy of Prince Anthony Bart-Appiah)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Such a mission, which could include student exchange programs, academic partnerships and further opportunities connecting Africa to the United States and the rest of the world, requires an all-hands-on-deck approach, which is why GETFund Administrator Paul Adjei is calling for members of the diaspora worldwide to align themselves with the project of turning open-air classrooms into permanent structures of hope.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGETFund is building modern classrooms to restore dignity to learning, but we cannot do it alone at the speed that our children need,\u201d Adjei said in a written statement sent to The Informer. \u201c[We] need the diaspora\u2019s help through investment, philanthropy and advocacy to act faster.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tackling-a-nationwide-need-for-equitable-education-access\"><strong>Tackling a Nationwide Need for Equitable Education Access<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Data released by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unesco.org\/en\">United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization <\/a>&nbsp;(UNESCO) in 2020 revealed that an estimated 283,000 primary-aged and 135,000 lower secondary-aged children in Ghana are out of school.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/africaeducationwatch.org\/\">Africa Education Watch<\/a> December 2025 Census of Out-of-School Children in Northern Ghana <a href=\"https:\/\/africaeducationwatch.org\/publication\/census-of-oosc-in-northern-ghana\">report<\/a> stated that, in some cases, schools under trees leave children exposed to environmental risks and are sometimes staffed with untrained or absentee teachers\u2014 conditions that can make school unattractive for many.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithout infrastructure, there can\u2019t be equitable access,\u201d said Africa Education Watch Executive Director Kofi Asare during a Channel One TV <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/9CQjqEZ2r6M\">panel<\/a> on Jan. 13. \u201cEquitable access is a key denominator of success.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asare revealed that before 2024, there was a deficit of one million desks in the West African country, which resulted in&nbsp; \u20b5700 million (more than $64 million) being allocated from GETFund and the country\u2019s District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) for desks.
