It is embodied in the people we choose to honor, and if we choose to serve,\u201d said ASALH President and CEO Dr. Karsonya \u201cKaye\u201d Wise Whitehead, during the organization\u2019s annual Black History Month Luncheon at the JW Marriott in Northwest D.C. on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Established by Carter G. (Shevry Lassiter\/ The Washington Informer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>As part of her keynote address, Whitehead emphasized the importance of building a life without \u201cempty promises\u201d for the next generation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201c[Woodson] is someone who taught us that the foundation matters, that when the wind is reaching, when the storms are coming, we dig down with our roots into the good soil, and we get stronger,\u201d said the ASALH president. \u201cHow can [our children] withstand this world if we are not building them up,&nbsp; how do they know who they are, if you and I have not told them\u2026how do you expect them to survive?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-from-planting-trees-to-building-communities-asalh-s-plan-for-black-america\"><strong>From &#8216;Planting Trees&#8217; to Building Communities, ASALH&#8217;s Plan for Black America<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the core of her riveting keynote address, Whitehead offered a three-point survival tactic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amid an afternoon of upliftment, including the metaphoric and literal flowers bestowed to community champion Gladys Gary Vaughn, the ASALH CEO journeyed through the steps of resistance needed to stir change in \u201can age-old battle\u201d of white supremacy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of that fight, she added, is assuming the courage to bear fruits unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou are sitting on the trees planted by Zora, planted by Ida, planted by Langston Hughes, planted by King. Kevin Lamar Peterman of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.19thstreetbc.org\/\">Nineteenth Street Baptist Church<\/a> necessitated the Black community\u2019s unwavering commitment to its institutions and suggested that it \u201cbring up a future of Gladys Gary Vaughns,\u201d recognizing the leaders\u2019 commitment to civil rights, equity and uplifting others.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we do not protect our institutions in this day,\u201d Peterman added, \u201cwe will destroy ourselves and our children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, the addresses conveyed the everclear message of not only remembering the roots and traditions of those who came before, but paving the road for the future success and elevation of Black society in America.
